Rock Grinding

A visit to Olumo Rock, Abeokuta in Nigeria

In this country could never know the value of what we have until we have all had a tour Olumo the rock. In Suday, fourth of May 2008 took a firm and courageous decision to visit Olumo rock in Abeokuta in Ogun State of Nigeria after a lot more interesting stories I had heard of the rock. Before this historic visit, which had only thought of Abeokuta as a small city with prominent many illustrious sons and daughters of which have contributed greatly to the development of the country.

It was exactly 11.15, I had chosen to go to see for myself what wonderful stunning natural rock Olumo rock called everyone that has spoken to me instead of going to church on Sunday. Soon he had a commercial vehicle in Abeokuta Oshodi. My observation of passengers on the bus showed that 12 out of 18 passengers in the vehicle headed to a party in the city, so I wondered what the view was Abeokuta have for me. Abeokuta in fact be made a party place I reasoned.

The bus soon left me in a place called Kuto still in Abeokuta, where I took another vehicle I stopped just before the rock Olumo. I had noticed that Abeokuta itself is an ancient city of hills full of rocks. This rock is incredibly wonderful Olumo. Us (With Patrick, Bassey Akpan) soon made friends with a guide and photographer to give us historical accounts about the rock and take some pictures of us through digital camera. Our first destination was climbing the stairs (which I understood was artificially attached to the rock by the current Governor of the State, His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel popularly called by his admirers OGD policy in 2006 to boost tourism agreement of the rock) This year we are completely tired and we had to take a break immediately reached the top of the terrace forever in the rock with a balcony.

Next they showed us the "time of the EGBA Hide-out" obviously natural caves were small holes in the ground, we were told that the EGBA warriors hid their children and wives in these caves while the attention of their enemies in inter-tribal wars. We know that the festival itself attracts the Alake of Egbaland and several other dignitaries from within and outside the city.

We were surprised to discover that some older women still living in the top of the rock. These women are simply says that generation "seventh" were indeed very nice and kind to meet. Our next mission took us to the top of the rock. This gave us an impressive view of Abeokuta, as almost every structure in this city could be seen. Among the highlights were the home of the late MKO Abiola family, Egbaland first mosque in the premises of a mission school, once said that housing now Part Ogun Television House, the first church in Nigeria located in Egbaland the influence of Reverend Samuel Ajayi Crowther Gollmer and other missionaries and Saro.

The River Ogun State which derives its name also could be seen flowing from surprisingly far away. The palace of Alake of Egbaland said to be full of historical antiquities could also be seen.

The total height of the rock was said to be 137 meters above sea level and our guide pointed out a particular place, he explained was the center of the rock, not far from this place is a great length of the crack that completely separates the rock causing it to divide. According to our guide to some European in the hope of finding gold invaded the rock, a strike in the center of the rock caused blood to gush from the rock and crack the rock with long experience. As we climbed this magnificent rock hit series of questions my memory. I was just imagining how the trees I saw at the top of the rock could have grown without any access to land, and how the rock said to have been discovered by a hunter. Once again, I imagine how a hunter may have discovered what could have been visible to everyone.

But there a lesson I learned from all that God is wonderful and greater than all. The Egbas also may have learned this lesson many centuries before me.
