Bits Set

I have a question about simple computers and how many instructions may be set pending on the number of bits.?

Assume a simple machine uses four bits to represent its instruction set. How many different instructions can this machine have? How many instructions could it have if eight bits are used? How many if 16 bits are used?

Well, to answer you question I will show you the answer, plus show you how to calculate it yourself.

1 bit can be either 0 or 1. So that is 2 different instructions.
The mathematical term for this would be 2 to the power of 1.

2 bits cane be 00, 01, 10, 11. So that is 4 different instructions.
Mathematically, that is 2 to the power of 2, or 2 squared.

So 4 bits would be 2 to the power of 4, which is, 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 = 16.
8 bits is 2 to the poer of 8, 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 = 256, or 16 squared.
16 bits is 2 to the power of 16, or 256 squared. This is 65,536
